I composed ‘Chrysalis’ inspired by the beautiful monarch butterfly. After emerging from chrysalis, this monarch flies into the wild. Its orange wings are laced with black lines and bordered with white dots. In this special piano music, you can hear many dissonant notes. It takes some getting used to at first, but when you play ‘Chrysalis’ more times, your hearing will get used to it. Each measure has a different harmonic color. Sometimes you can detect two different keys, one in the right hand and another in the left hand. So this piano music is very unpredictable, just as the flight of the monarch is very erratic and unpredictable. Chrysalis is an introduction to atonal elements in music. If you open yourself up to it, a whole new world of sound will open up to you. SRA
